Tuesday Bookworms
Constitution
1. Who is allowed to join the group?
·
Boys and
girls in Grades 4 through 7 – younger or older readers
at the discretion of the library.
·
Readers
from other towns/libraries are welcome.
·
We will
also welcome any friends or guests that you would like to bring along.
2. How shall we choose the books we read?
·
Everyone
takes a turn to recommend a book
·
We take
votes on recommendations made by other members
·
We take
votes on recommendations made by Miss
Sue
·
We choose
from popular titles and series and use sources
such as the NY Times bestseller lists
·
We walk
the library and choose from the shelves
·
We choose
books by author as well as title or genre
·
We plan
our books one or more months ahead?
3. What happens if I dislike or don’t find time
to finish the book?
·
Attend the
meeting anyway but you must
be prepared for other readers to talk about the ending. Not liking the book enough to finish it is a
comment in itself.
·
Members
should make every effort to read the book so that we discuss it fully, however Tuesday Bookworms must
not take priority over your schoolwork
4. What if my opinions are different from
everyone else’s?
·
We all
have individual preferences and ideas about books – don’t be afraid to speak
up. No-one’s opinion is incorrect; there are no wrong or right answers. All comments – positive and negative – are
valuable.
·
All members must be able to speak without interruption or
criticism by others
5. What if I read the book but can’t make it to
the meeting?
·
Please let
me know if you are unable to attend a meeting. If too many people are
unavailable it might be more convenient to meet at another time
·
Contact
Miss Sue at sshepherd@biblio.org, at
203-758-2634, or come in to the library ahead of the meeting. You may use any
of these methods to let me know what you would like to say about the book, and
your comments will be passed on during the discussion.
·
If you would
like, Miss Sue can reply to you by email to let you know what the other members
said about the book – you must make sure that your parents give me permission
to contact you this way
·
If you
miss any movies or other happenings related to the discussion, I’ll try to
arrange for you to see them at another convenient time.
6. What if my school/sport/musical or other commitments
mean that I can’t make it to most of the meetings?
·
We’ll do
our best to schedule special meetings during school vacations so that you can
keep up with what we are doing and still be a member of the group. Stay
up-to-date on our scheduled reading at
www.middleburypubliclibrary.org
7. What else will happen at meetings?
·
We’ll
watch movies or movie clips that enhance the discussion
·
Special
snacks that relate to the story might be eaten – be sure to let me know if you
have any food allergies
·
Other
activities that are suggested to us through the literature
·
We’ll
discuss kids websites that recommend and review books
8. Anything else?
·
The
library will provide the books – you will not need to buy them each month
·
If parents
accept responsibility, some members may read the book using a library Kindle
·
Always let
your parents know which book we have chosen to read
·
Be open
minded – if the selected book is not something you would normally choose, give
it a try anyway.
